Window dressings – Curtains vs. Roman Blinds

This light-filled room, perfect for home staging in Pukekohe, features several windows adorned with bamboo blinds and sheer curtains.

A big question we are often asked, is which placement is best for curtains compared to roman blinds. It is incredibly important because they function very differently and each come with their own pros and cons.

As this picture demonstrates, some settings – such as at full length windows – are much better suited for curtains. They fall beautifully when given the full length of floor to ceiling, but are also a lot easier than roman blinds to navigate and use when they reach the floor. For that same reason, roman blinds work best for shorter lengths. Additionally, windows with limited accessibility – normally due to having furniture set in front, may benefit more from being dressed with roman blinds. This is because they are closed using a pulley from one side, making it simpler than reaching across large pieces of furniture to draw curtains together.

When it comes to light leakage, both window dressing types have solutions, however it may come down to space availability and budget.

Many hotel room designs feature curtain tracks recessed directly into the ceiling, meaning the top of the curtain sits flush with it. This not only creates a luxurious feel, but also cuts out plenty of spilled light. Another design detail is ensuring the curtains overlap when they are drawn – the small consideration will make a massive difference.

For roman blinds, reducing light leakage is best achieved by sitting them behind a pelmet. This cuts out light spilling from the top, and is a lovely way to add a decorative feature. It is especially useful if the blinds cannot sit within the window opening, and are required to be hung from the wall instead.
