STAINLESS STEEL – THE TRENDING MATERIAL FOR RESIDENTIAL PROJECTS

minimalist kitchen featuring a stainless steel island, dark cabinets, built in ovens, pendant lights, and simple decorative items on a light wall—showcasing trending material in modern design.

Dominating kitchen interiors at the moment is a quite unexpected material… Stainless steel. Often associated with industrial kitchens, this material has typically been used in back of house areas, or for spaces prioritising function over form. However, there seems to be a new wave of modern – and dare we say elegant?! – stainless steel kitchens.

a trending material, stainless steel sink with two faucets is set in a stone countertop; a framed black and white photo of a pear hangs on the beige wall above.

From a functional perspective, stainless steel is perfect for the kitchen. Although energy intensive to mine, once produced, the material is infinitely recyclable and can have numerous life cycles.

Within the kitchen environment, its smooth and non-porous qualities makes it incredibly hygienic and very easy to clean. What’s more, it is heatproof, eliminating the need for heatproof mats etc, which can clutter any limited counter space. Due to the sheet nature of the material, unique design details such as integrated sinks, can be drawn up, making your home completely unique to you.

Aesthetically speaking, stainless steel is reflective, therefore lightening and brightening any space. If the classic chrome is not your favourite look, there are various finishes available. Brushed stainless steel creates a more matte effect, and also reduces the visibility of fingermarks. Oxidised lacquering is an alternative way to get a similar effect, but with a larger range of colours, and at a lower cost.

Taking it another direction, consider emulating the beautiful reflective quality across other surfaces.

This abstract fresco on the dining wall of this Parisian apartment echoes that same feeling of stainless steel, but in a new way. Alternatively, this can be done with a more traditional wall cladding such as polished plaster and clay.
