In the last post, we took a deep dive into the architectural and space planning merits from the seventies era, and today is a zoom in on the colour palettes, materials, patterns and general look and feel.
Starting with colours, earthy tones and jewel shades dominated the colour palettes to create warm and inviting spaces – again, fostering connection, as mentioned in the previous blog post. Mustard yellows, browns, oranges, terracotta, and avocado greens were largely used – creating a sense of nature and comfort.
Homes were often rich in timber wall panelling and veneer furniture pieces, which reinforced this soft warm colour palette. Punchy jewel shades usually jumped out via bold wall coverings and upholstery. The patterns used were geometric, colourful and lively… these added a little ‘party’ to the space, which the 70’s are so well known for.
Adding a textural quality and a nod to unfinished materials, exposed concrete and brick were also major components in the material palette. Although this may seem like cold and harsh choices in comparison to the rest of the palette, they worked to create a balanced and versatile scheme.
Looking ahead to the modern day, how do we begin to incorporate 70’s interior design? The answer is simple – pick and choose which elements you like, and use those. We do not need to include every design feature from a specific era to have a cohesive design. It’s about marrying up the details from then and now, to create a harmonious scheme which works for you.
